Waiting On Wednesday #13!

My W.O.W. pick for this week is....

Walk On Earth A Stranger (The Gold Seer Trilogy, #1)
Rae Carson
Young Adult Fantasy
September 22nd 2015

The first book in a new trilogy from acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Rae Carson. A young woman with the magical ability to sense the presence of gold must flee her home, taking her on a sweeping and dangerous journey across Gold Rush–era America.

Lee Westfall has a secret. She can sense the presence of gold in the world around her. Veins deep beneath the earth, pebbles in the river, nuggets dug up from the forest floor. The buzz of gold means warmth and life and home—until everything is ripped away by a man who wants to control her. Left with nothing, Lee disguises herself as a boy and takes to the trail across the country. Gold was discovered in California, and where else could such a magical girl find herself, find safety? Rae Carson, author of the acclaimed Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy, dazzles with this new fantasy that subverts both our own history and familiar fantasy tropes.

Walk on Earth a Stranger, the first book in this new trilogy, introduces—as only Rae Carson can—a strong heroine, a perilous road, a fantastical twist, and a slow-burning romance. Includes a map and author’s note on historical research.

To Kill A Mockingbird
Harper Lee
Young Adult Classic
December 1982

The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it, To Kill A Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film, also a classic.

Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, To Kill A Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behavior—to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos. Now with over 18 million copies in print and translated into forty languages, this regional story by a young Alabama woman claims universal appeal. Harper Lee always considered her book to be a simple love story. Today it is regarded as a masterpiece of American literature.

The Demon Inside
M.L. Sparrow
Young Adult Paranormal
May 11th 2015

Darcy was a perfectly normal teenage girl, enjoying the summer after completing her A Levels with her boyfriend Alec. Until the night strange creatures begin falling from the sky, infecting people and transforming them into crazed, animalistic cannibals.
Having lost everything in one foul swoop - her parents, her home and all future plans - all Darcy can do is try to protect the people she does have left. Together, she and Alec, along with her younger sister, sarcastic best-friend, Alec's alcoholic father and the family dog, set off on a journey to find somewhere safe in a world where everything is different.
However, when they do finally discover a haven, a place to call home again, can they remain? And who will survive?

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

My Review:

*Note I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

I thought that the concept of this novel was well developed and I quite enjoyed the flow of this novel. The characters had depth and had a nice amount of character development throughout the novel.

The action kept me on the edge of my seat and I needed to know more.

My only problem with this book was that I wasn't able to connect with the characters as much as I wanted to. That being said, the overall story was so very good that I couldn't rate this story lower than 4 stars.

Review: Into A Million Pieces by Angela V Cook

Into A Million Pieces
Angela V Cook
Young Adult Fantasy
January 27th 2015

Allison McKready is a succubus. So is her twin sister. But while Allison spends her summer break hiding in the library behind her Goth makeup, Jade fools around as often as she can. Allison can’t believe Jade would ignore their mother’s fatal example so recklessly, but concealing a cursed bloodline and its dangerous effects is far from Allison’s only problem. Mean girl Julie’s snob mob is determined to ruin her summer, and Aunt Sarah’s Bible thumping is getting louder. Only her new friend, Ren Fisher, offers safe haven from the chaos of her life.

When one of Jade’s risky dates leads to humiliation and sudden tragedy, Allison reels, and Ren catches her. But as her feelings for him grow, so does her fear that she’ll hurt him—or worse—in an unguarded moment. The choice is coming—love him or save him—but Allison might not live to make it. One way or another, the curse will have its due.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

My Review:

I loved this book! The characters were brilliantly written and well thought out. The setting was eye catching and described quite well. The plot had me biting my nails and kept me flipping the pages well into the morning.

Allison was sweet and adorable! I felt terrible for her. Especially when she was the target of some very mean girls. I thought her relationship with her sister, Jade, was well played out and I loved the tension.

Ren was totally swoon worthy and I was rooting for Ren and Allison to be together forever!

I loved the succubus aspect and how that was introduced into the story. Jade acts as if it's a gift while Allison acts as if it's a curse. They both learn what being a succubus means and what's right and wrong.

There's just something about this TV series that just fascinates me! I love the fact that in truth, animals do have the brain-power and strength to stand up against us. This show dives right into that concept with a brilliant cast of characters.

This show makes me want to buy Zoo by James Patterson right now!

2.) Killjoys (Season 1) on SyFy

Space Bounty Hunters? Yes, friggin please! Kickass cast of characters? Um Hell Yeah! Intricately woven plots? Yes!

Obsidian (Lux, #1)
Jennifer L. Armentrout
Young Adult Fantasy
May 8th 2012

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

Hot Beach Romance
All this talk about the beach gave me time to think about compiling my travel bucket list. I'm not getting any younger and the time to have fun on the beach and off is NOW. My travel bucket list includes lots of islands, island nations, and beaches. (Yeah, there's inland too, but some things like castles and chocolate are hard to give up even in the face of smooth sand beaches and lapping waves.) So, here goes in no particular order, where I'd like to be while holding a hot read in my hands.
  1. Easter Island. I hear the plane ride is really long, and the tour, really short. But I still want to do it. I need to see those giant statues for myself.
  1. The Great Wall of China. I have to see something astronauts can see from space.
  1. Bangkok, Thailand. I have no particular reason for wanting to go to Thailand, but I’ve always had a strong desire to visit.
  1. Greek Islands. My husband has always wanted to bicycle through the Greek Isles. While I think we may be a little old for it, I’d love to see the water, the beaches, and eat the food, anyway—bicycle or no bicycle.
  1. Egypt, the Pyramids. I may not be able to see all the wonders of the world, but I have to see this in person.
  1. Reykjavik, Iceland. For some reason, I’m usually in line for the bathroom on international flights when flying over Iceland, and see it from the tiny airplane window while bouncing on the balls of my feet. So I have to see it for myself—in the summer.
  1. Switzerland. It’s neutral. There's chocolate. There are castles. There’s gotta be something to that.
  1. Hong Kong. I always meant to visit before the handover, but never made it there. The food is supposed to be amazing. And as a bonus, English is spoken.
  1. Belgium. Belgian beer and fries. Need I say more.
Australia and New Zealand. I’ve always wanted to go to the other side of the earth. The animals are vastly different. The geography looks spectacular. And have you seen those videos of hot Aussie men and women frolicking on the beach???Summer is here!
